Teacher's Training Workshop on "Cultivating Peace through Heritage Education"

A teacher training workshop on promoting peace through cultural heritage was organized by UNESCO in collaboration with Ministry of CAD at Islamabad College for Girls on 17 April 2013. This training workshop titled, "Promoting Culture of
Peace through Cultural Heritage" is basically the part of UNESCO's programme on World Heritage Education and aimed at building the capacity of teachers to help students develop their understanding of World Heritage Sites of Pakistan as a testimony to peace, human rights and democracy. It aims to inspire students to respect other people, individuals or groups, sects and their diverse traditions and motivate them to search for peaceful conflict resolution in their lives and also develop an attitude to co-operate in the spirit of solidarity in support of World Heritage Conservation.

Around 25 teachers from 10 schools of Islamabad Capital Territory attended the training workshop.

"Educating our young people about our shared heritage enables them to understand more who they are and where they come from", said Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata, Country Director/ Representative UNESCO, while addressing on the occasion of certificate distribution. She emphasized on education as the most important medium for promoting peace, tolerance and meaning of being global citizens which definitely will have a long term impact for development of a pluralistic society.

The event was also attended by Ms Shaista Pirzada, Principal Islamabad College for Girls and Prof. Muhammad Rafique Tahir, Joint Secretary (Education), Ministry of CAD along with educationists and teachers. The Joint Secretary CAD appreciated the initiative of UNESCO and assured to further carry out such trainings in other schools/colleges of Islamabad Capital Territory, by the teachers already trained in the workshop. Director UNESCO ensured to provide the resource material for further training workshops.
