UNESCO Islamabad in collaboration with Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and Elementary and Secondary Education Department (E&SE Dept) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have organized a 1-day workshop on development of school safety action plan on 13 December 2011 for the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
UNESCO provided technical and financial assistance for the workshop under One UN Disaster Risk Management Joint Program. The representatives of PDMA/PaRRSA and E&SE Dept appreciated UNESCO for its support to organize the workshop. UNESCO Provincial Officer for KPK/FATA highlighted the importance of school safety interventions during her opening remarks. The workshop gathered officials from PDMA, elementary and secondary education department, communication and works department, Pakistan army, police department, academia, private sector school organizations, UN agencies, and other civil society organizations on a common platform to urge and emphasize need of safe schools, especially in the scenario of floods and earthquake.
The participants of the workshop were oriented with global best practices, structural and non-structural measures including appropriate preparedness measures at school level in the context of school safety. Major topics of the workshop include: orientation on one million safer schools and hospitals campaign, orientation on school safety plan & tools and guidelines for development of provincial interdepartmental policy and coordination group for school safety.
