DG UNESCO, Ms. Irina Bokova met senior officials and representatives of the government, UN, civil society organizations in Islamabad

Islamabad - 6/7 February 2014: Director General UNESCO, Ms. Irina Bokova as part of her state visit to Pakistan met with the Country Team of the United Nations in Pakistan. The UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Timmo Pakala
welcoming Ms. Bokova highlighted the various efforts and activities under the ONE UN Programme and acknowledged UNESCO's contribution in various joint initiatives particularly in the education sector.
Ms. Bokova, also met with the students of Islamabad College for Girls (ICG) where she was received by the college students and Mrs. Ghazala Kaleem, Principal of ICG. Other official's presents on the occasion included Mr. Balig
-ur-Rehman, Minister of State for Education, Training and Standards in Higher Education (MET & SHE), Mr. Ahmed Bakhsh Lehri, Secretary, MET & SHE, Mr. Faridullah Khan, Secretary Capital Administration and Development Division (CA&D). Director General expressed her keen interests in the painting and art works by the students at the occasion. At the ICG Ms. Bokova also inaugurated a special rainwater harvesting system at the Islamabad College for Girls and planted a tree in the college as part of UNESCO's ongoing collaboration with Islamabad College for Girls on sustainable development project.
Ms. Irina Bokova also called on the Federal Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Zaid Hamid and other senior officials of the ministry. On this occasion Ms. Bokova and Mr. Junaid Zaidi, Rector COMSATS signed an agreement
between the two organizations on the establishment of UNESCO Chair on Knowledge Systems for Integrated Water Resources Management at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (Wah Cantt. Campus, Pakistan).
Upon her arrival at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Standing Committee on Scientific & Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH), she applauded the COMSTECH's mission on helping members' states
to strengthen their individual and collective capacities in science and technology. Ms. Irina Bokova also visited the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). She met the students and inspected various stalls from the students and Pakistan Science Foundation. She also addressed the students on "Mobilizing Youth for Culture of Peace".
