UNESCO, UNICEF, Federal Ministry of Education and Professional Training, Provincial Ministries of Education launched successful consultations.

Four consultations were held in four cities in Pakistan (Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar) within the framework of the global SDG-4 and its targets which aim at ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. The workshops were drawn upon the Framework For Action (FFA) Education 2030 adopted in November 2015 by UNESCO Member States that aims at supporting all countries to realize their own vision and ambitions for education. Read more...

National Consultation held for sensitization of stakeholders on SDG-4/ Education 2030

Islamabad - 15 December 2015: UNESCO Islamabad, UNICEF and the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, Government of Pakistan jointly organized the first national consultation workshop on Sustainable Development Goal - 4 (SDG) "the Education 2030 Agenda" in Islamabad. The workshop aimed at developing a common understanding on SDG-4 and devising a roadmap and effective strategies for attainment of quality education and goals set for 2030 which were adopted at the World Education Summit in May 2015 in Incheon Republic of Korea this year.

Improving Girls' Primary Education - UNESCO and Government of Pakistan launched Girls' Right to Education Pogramme

Islamabad - 08 October 2015: To improve better access, quality and safe learning environments for girls in the hardest-to-reach areas of the country, UNESCO and the Government of Pakistan launched the Girls' Right to Education Programme for Pakistan worth 7 million USD. The programme aimed at enrolling 50,000 more girls in primary schools of remote areas over the next three years.

In this context, an official launching ceremony was held in Islamabad which was well attended by officials and representatives of the federal, provincial and area Governments of Pakistan, Parliamentarians, United Nations, Civil Society Organizations, Academia, Press and Development Partners. Nomination call for UNESCO-Hamdan Prize 2015-2016

The fourth edition of the UNESCO-Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers has opened the call for nominations.

The prize is awarded every two years and it recognizes initiatives that contribute to improving educational practices around the world, with priority given to developing countries and to marginalized and disadvantaged communities.

United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security project launched for the conflict stricken area of D.I.Khan

Islamabad - 29 May 2014: To improve human security by fostering peace and multi-sectoral development initiatives, UNESCO Islamabad launched the Trust Fund for Human Security (TFHS) Project in Islamabad.
The initiative is part of the One UN Programme II (2013-2017) for Pakistan. The project will be implemented over a period of two years with cost of USD 2.1 million in Union Council Musazai Sharif of D.I.Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Read more...

Literacy is integral to achieving all development goals

Can you imagine looking at this article and not being able to read it? For those of us who learned to read and write at an early age, reading and writing are very much a part of our daily lives. However, for 53 percent of Pakistani women and 28 percent of Pakistani men over the age of 15 (UNESCO projections for 2015), information that we take for granted is not readily accessible.

Every year on 8 September International Literacy Day is observed throughout the world. Two of the Education for All (EFA) goals adopted in 2000 and to be achieved by 2015, focus on literacy. Goal 4includes "Achieving a 50 per cent improvement in levels of adult literacy by 2015, especially for women" and Goal 6 has to do with quality of education and achievement of measurable learning outcomes, especially in literacy, numeracy and essential life skills. Read more...

World Teachers Day, 5 October 2013

World Teachers' Day was held on 5 October to celebrate the essential role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels. It also commemorates the anniversary of the 1966 signature of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers. The 2013 events had focused on the theme "A Call for Teachers".

On the occasion of World Teacher's day, UNESCO urged the government and society to stand and support teachers for their continuous development,
professional competencies and lifelong learning, bringing social, economic and intellectual development to the nation.

National Seminar on Right to Education, Article 25-A

Islamabad, 3 September 2013: Pakistan has committed to achieve Six Education For All Goals envisaged in the Dakar Framework of Action, unanimously resolved by 166 counties and international community during April 2000. Provision
of free and compulsory primary education to all children is one of the six goals of Education For All. Commitment of Pakistan towards Education For All has been reflected and reaffirmed in all its policy documents, including National Education Policy of 2009. Read more...

International Literacy Day, 8 September 2013

UNESCO Islamabad is observing International Literacy Day in Pakistan. Current year's theme for ILD is "Literacies for the 21st Century". Like every year, UNESCO Islamabad is supporting various organizations including Federal and Provincial Governments (Departments of Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education), and NGOs working for promotion of Literacy and NFBE in the provinces. Some 15-20 events are being organized by the stakeholders all over the country with UNESCO's support.
The events include advocacy campaigns, literacy walks, seminars, speeches and arts competitions, and seminars with the teachers' associations. About 10 events are being organized in the rural communities in order to mobilize the communities to send their young children (boys and girls) to schools.

Launching of Audio-Visual Material on Early Childhood Education

Islamabad - 22 July 2013: UNESCO Islamabad launched Audio-Visual Material on Early Childhood Education. The material consists of 20 Instructional Videos on the themes selected from the National Curriculum for ECE, 2007.

UNESCO supports Academy of Educational Planning and Management (AEPAM) Islamabad for National Plan of Action on MDG Acceleration Framework (2013-15)

Islamabad - On 13-14 June 2013, a meeting of the core group was held in "Academy of Educational Planning and Management (AEPAM)", Islamabad, under the chairmanship of Dr. Imranullah Khan, Deputy Secretary, to review and discuss the draft National Plan of Action (NPA) on MDG Acceleration Framework (MFA). A presentation for the briefing of the Minister has been prepared by the UNESCO Consultant from AEPAM and it was reviewed by the members of the Core Group for its improvement. University. Teachers Association (PUTA) in collaboration with UNESCO on 27th February 2013 in Peshawar. Provincial Ministers and Secretary Education reaffirmed their commitment to pass legislation in the provincial assembly for enforcement of Article 25-A of the Constitution, on priority basis.

Representatives of political parties, university professors, and NGOs appreciated the initiative taken by UNESCO and pledged to mobilize support for achievement of Education For All goals in the province.

President signs Bill on Article-25-A, Right to Free & Compulsory Education (Bill Passed for Islamabad Capital Territory and Sindh)

SINDH: Taking lead on other provinces, the Sindh Assembly on 13th February Wednesday passed a law to ensure implementation on Article 25-A of the Constitution, which provides free and compulsory education to all children of aged five to 16 years. UNESCO congratulated the Sindh Assembly and the provincial government on the adoption of a bill that provides for free and compulsory education for children of between five and 16 years. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, UNESCO representative in Pakistan, Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata, said that Sindh had taken lead and shown commitment to ensure that the fundamental right of basic education was provided to all children of between five and 16 years.
