Spreading Smiles among Flood Affected Children

UNESCO Pakistan received donation collected by employees of Qatari Diar, a private company in Doha, for the provision of clothes and food items among the affected children in the aftermath of floods in 2010, which devastated homes and livelihood of millions of people in Pakistan.

Following the consultative process and assessments, three severely hit districts in Sindh were selected for the provision of school uniforms, shoes and dry milk to

30 Nursery and Grade-I students of each selected school in district Dadu, Jamshoro and Thatta. Keeping in view the limited donation, 10 schools were selected from each of the above districts.

During 2010, UNESCO supported Early Childhood Education Centers in Government Primary Schools located in flood affected areas of these districts, which continued up to March 2011. The ECE Centers were opened and managed through Provincial Institute of Teacher Education (PITE), Nawabshah. Keeping in view the previous interventions of UNESCO in these districts, it was planned to select these schools for the provision of uniforms and food incentives. After a competitive process, M/S Sindh Community Foundation, a Hyderabad based NGO, was awarded contract for distribution for a number of schools.

On 12th August, 2011, UNESCO Director in Pakistan, participated in the distribution ceremony at Government Girls Primary School, (one of many schools benefiting from this scheme) Civil Hospital, Sujawal, 23 Kilometers south-east of Thatta. The entire sub-district of Sujawal was severely hit during the floods in 2010 and the town itself was completely evacuated as the river water started surging to the town.

It was a moment of happiness and joy for the children when the Director herself distributed the uniform and dry milk among all students of class. Children were carrying placards saying thanks to Qatari Diar and UNESCO. Although a small intervention, but it served as a useful incentive for the students to stay in school and helped in bringing back and spreading smiles in their lives.
