Media Meeting on Global Action Week for EFA 2012

To mark the occasion of Education for All Global Action Week 2012, UNESCO Islamabad, in collaboration with PACADE, Lahore, organized a Media Meeting with Journalists of Print & Electronic Media on 23rd April, 2012 at National Press Club, Islamabad.

Education For All (EFA) Global Action Week is observed every year to reflect upon the progress toward achieving the EFA Goals and reaffirm the EFA commitments made by the 164 governments at the World Education Forum in Dakar, Senegal, in April 2000. This year, EFA Global Action Week is being observed from 22nd to 28th April 2012 and the theme chosen at the global level is Early Childhood Care and Education, which pertains to the very first of the 6 EFA Goals. As a signatory of the Dakar Framework of Action Pakistan has pledged to achieve all the six EFA goals by 2015.

The objective of the Media Meeting was to sensitize journalists about the important role they could play to raise awareness among the illiterate masses as to why it is not only important for them to invest on childrenís education but also for themselves to become literate.

On the occasion, Dr. Roshan Chitrakar, Deputy Director, UNESCO Islamabad read the UNESCO Director Generalís Message on EFA Global Action Week 2012 and addressed the audience on the effectiveness of ECCE in the context of Education For All. Mr. Arshad Saeed Khan, Senior National Specialist (Education), in his presentation, highlighted the international and national data about the state of education in general and ECCE in Pakistan in particular. Mr. Khan shed light on the catalytic role that the Early Childhood Care and Education plays in developing the personality and self esteem of children and in helping them realize their full potential.

Other dignitaries/speakers included Mr. Muhammad Dawood, Deputy Secretary-General, Pakistan National Commission for UNESCO, Mr. Iqbal-ur-Rehman, Director (Education), NCHD, Ms. Aysha Bilal from Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi, Lahore, and the co-host Mr. Inayatullah, President PACADE, Lahore.

The event also included a press briefing on the activities to be carried out by UNESCO and other stakeholders during the EFA Global Action Week (22-28 April, 2012).
