|Hyderabad, 3 December 2013: UNESCO in collaboration with Nawabshah Disability Forum celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Hyderabad under the year's theme of "Break Barriers, Open Doors: For an Inclusive Society|
and Development for All".
The event was well attended by the representatives of Civil Society Organizations, government functionaries, academia and media. There was a marked presence of Disabled Persons' Organizations and persons with disabilities.
Among the participants were, Mr. Abdul Aleem Memon, Secretary Special Education Department, Government of Sindh, Mr. Ghulam Nabi Nizamani, CBID Network Pakistan, Mr. Mustafa Baloch, Regional Director, SPO, Mr. Suleman G. Abro, Chief Executive, SAWFCO, Mr. Abdul Razzak Umrani, Regional Manager, HANDS and Mr. Akbar Mahesar Pak-US Alumni Network.
The speakers highlighted that the majority of persons with disabilities were subject to social exclusion on a daily basis, which affected negatively in securing their fundamental human rights to access basic social services and have equal opportunities in the processes of development, primarily because of the unavailability of legislation to protect their rights and protect them from the discrimination.
Kazi Ayaz Mahessar, Provincial Coordinator Sindh, UNESCO read out Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata's message at the event, which emphasized that the fundamental principle behid CRPD is to change mind-set of the people and society as a whole to accommodate the individual differences, cherish diversity, foster tolerance and ensure rights of persons with disabilities.
At the end of the event the following resolution was passed unanimously:
Sindh Government should have a law for people with disabilities after the 18th amendment in the constitution of devolution of powers at provincial level
Immediate amendment should be made in the Sindh local government ordinance 2013 before upcoming local government elections 2014 in Sindh with having reserved seats for people with disabilities like women, minorities and workers.
Government of Sindh must implement "The Sindh Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education for All" Law 2013 with promotion of Inclusive Education
The issue of disability should be mainstreamed in the governmental and non-governmental organizations by removing the barriers and opening the doors for them.
