|LowerDir, 3 December 2013: UNESCO in collaboration with Special Abilities Development Association (SADA) commemorated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by organizing an advocacy seminar entitled "Rights of|
Persons withDisabilities and UNCRPD" at Teemergara, Lower Dir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at Teemergara, Lower Dir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A large number of DPOs, NGOs, government representatives, Media, persons with disabilities and community members participated in the programme.
UNESCO Provincial Coordinator of KP, Mr. Waqar Shams, conveyed the massage of Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata, Director/Representative, UNESCO Pakistan. The message stressed upon the need for providing barrier free information, technologies and inclusive education to all children. It also pointed out that there is a need for anti-discriminatory legislations to protect the rights of persons with disabilities.
On the occasion Mr. Khursheed Alam, President SADA and Provincial Coordinator CBID Network, Pakistan said that a draft of the act for the implementation of rights of PWDs had already been drafted by SADA, which was being moved to the provincial parliament with the name of "Action for Change" to ensure the implementation on UNCRPD. He thanked UNESCO and all the guests for their participation and support to organizing the event.
In his addressed the Chief Guest, Mr Shah Qadam Khan, Chief Executive, Civil Defense Organization, Lower Dir, said that his organization along with its volunteers would provide full support to the communities, and in future they would extend support in organizing special sports festival in Lower Dir. The other key speakers on the occasion included Mr. Israr Alam, General Secretary SADA, Mr. Ishtiaq Hussain, Vice President SEWA, Mr. Akbar Khan, Coordinator, Peoples Rights Network. The speakers highlighted that the hardships faced by the PWDs resulted in their exclusion within the societies. This also led to affecting negatively in realizing their rights to access basic social services and having opportunities to participate equally and equitably in the processes of development.
