Seminar on the theme "What We Want in Future - Post 2015 MDG Strategy - Voices of the Persons with Disabilities".
In her keynote speech, Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata, Director/Representative, UNESCO Islamabad stressed for the need of implementation of CRPD in Pakistan. She emphasized that there should be a National Monitoring Mechanism for reporting of CRPD to the International Committee in Geneva; secondly, formation of a NGOs' Consortium for parallel monitoring i.e. Shadow Report. Dr. Nagata also shared Post 2015 MDG strategy to mainstream persons with disabilities in the development agenda.
Mrs. Ghayoor Sultana, Director General, DGSE in her welcome address apprised UNESCO Islamabad's efforts for observance of the International Day of the Persons with Disabilities. A large number of people from the GOs, INGOs, NGOs, DPOs and persons with disabilities participated in this Seminar. Three presentations were made by (1) Mr. Atif Sheikh (STEP) on the topic "Pakistan's Policies for the Persons with Disabilities", (2) Mr. Jawad Ahmed Raza on "Challenges faced by Deaf and Mute Persons", and (3) Syed Sardar Ahmed Pirzada, the first Blind Journalist on "Information and Communication Technologies and Visually Impaired Persons". After the presentation, persons with disabilities also shared their view and recommendations for post MDG Strategy.
Mr. Abdul Latif Leghari, Senior Joint Secretary, Ministry of CAD graced the occasion as Chief Guest. In his address, Mr. Leghari said that the deadline for Reporting of CRPD is fast approaching and DGSE has a pivotal role for the implementation and the implementation process may start from Islamabad Capital Territory which will serve as a role model for the provinces. He also requested UNESCO to assist Ministry of CAD to conduct a survey on disabilities in Islamabad Capital Territory.
