Celebrating International Literacy Day 2013, in Bahawalpur

Bahawalpur - 9 Sept 2013: Gul-e-Arzu (GEA) Development Organization joins hands with UNESCO and Social Help and Research Organization (SHRO) to celebrate the International Literacy Day on 9 September 2013.
GEA organized a seminer to underscore the importance of literacy as a fundamental human right and the social and economic dividends associated with it. The focus of the seminar was in keeping with the ILD theme, "Literacies for the 21st Century".

Mr. Muhammad Nasir, General Secretary, Social Help and Research Organization (SHRO) welcomed the guests, comprising a galaxy of notables from the Education Sector, NGOs, academia, press and electronic media and youth from various schools and colleges. Mr. Nasir stressed the importance of literacy for every man, woman, young and old, to enable them to participate and contribute in all spheres of life.

Mr. Fakharuddin, representing UNESCO on the occasion read out a speech prepared by Dr. Kay Kozue Nagata, Director, UNESCO Islamabad. He expressed concern over lack of basic reading and writing skills among children in Pakistan. The situation is exacerbated by the rise of new technologies and modern knowledge societies that make the ability to read and write all the more essential. The message stated that, "Young people need new skills to enter and succeed in the job market; knowledge of several languages, understanding of cultural diversity, lifelong learning.
