International Literacy Day 2013, Karachi

Karachi - 8 Sept 2013: UNESCO in collaboration with Directorate of Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education, Government of Sindh, celebrated International Literacy Day in Karachi. Senior Minister, Education and Literacy, Mr. Nisar
Ahmed Khuhro chaired the proceedings of seminar. A large number of students, government officials, along with Acting Secretary, Education and Literacy Department, representatives from civil society organizations and media participated in the seminar.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Muhammad Memon, a prominent educationist and Director, Institute of Educational Development at Aga Khan University, stressed on the importance of multiple literacies for meeting the needs of modern knowledge societies. He brought the attention of government towards reviewing the existing plan of action and develop a roadmap for future in collaboration with stakeholders. Read more...

Dialogue on Role of Teacher Unions in 25-A, Right to Education, on the eve of International Literacy Day 2013

Karachi - 10 Sept 2013: Celebrating International Literacy Day, UNESCO in collaboration with Idaara-e Taleem-o Aaghi (ITA), arranged a dialogue on 'Role of Teacher Unions in Article 25-A, Right to Education' at Aga Khan University Institute of
Educational Development, Karachi. The objectives of dialogue was to underscore and highlight the important role teacher unions can play in ensuring the right to education to all children by sensitizing teachers about importance of the fundamental right given to them by Constitution of Pakistan.

The dialogue was attended by about 50 teachers, parents and representatives of civil society organizations. Dr. Arif Ali, Member National Assembly from Karachi of Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaaf (PTI) was the chief guest at the event. Mr. Kazi Ayaz Mahessar, UNESCO Provincial Coordinator in Sindh, presented the statement written by Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata, UNESCO Director in Pakistan. He emphasized the importance of literacy in overall socio-economic development of the country and called on the stakeholders for joint efforts in the implementation of Article 25-A. He said that teacher unions can play a fundamental role in bringing the teacher back to school by focusing the schools where there is high prevalence of teacher absenteeism. Read more...
