International Literacy Day 2013, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Peshawar - 9 Sept 2013: International Literacy Day (ILD) was celebrated in KPK with technical and financial support from UNESCO in collaboration with Peshawar University Teachers association. A colorful event was held in
Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA) Hall of University of Peshawar, in which over 200 participants including teachers, students, representatives of civil society organizations, UN agencies, representatives of education department, and media personals actively participated. Mr. Sardar Hussain Babuk Ex-Education Minister KPK and Ms. Begum Meraj Humayoun (Convener Education Reform Committee) and member of Provincial Assembly ruling coalition graced the event as Chief Guests.

Event started with recitation from holly Quran, President PUTA Mr Jamil Chitrali thanked UNESCO for supporting the event in his welcome remarks. Mr. Waqar Shams Provincial Coordinator KPK and FATA, UNESCO read out UNESCO Islamabad Director Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata's message to the participants on her behalf. Girl students from University Public School presented a thoughtful skit on importance of girl's education. Students from University model school sung national songs.

Mr. Sardar Hussain Babuk in his address thanked UNESCO and PUTA for organizing this advocacy event, he said that despite the fact that he is no more Minister for Education but he will continue supporting education reforms in the province. Begum Meraj Humayun in her address mentioned current government efforts in restructuring curriculum and education structure, she also ensured that current provincial government will coordinate closely with international partners like UNESCO for education reforms in KPK. Bright students of University public school and university model schools were presented with awards from PUTA. PUTA president also announced that an out of school girl will be enrolled in University public school who discontinued her education because of her father's illness. "Madina" did not attend today's event because of her father's death yesterday, PUTA will bare all the expenses of the girl's education till her sixteen years of education. PUTA president thanked UNESCO for provision of funds and technical support for organizing the event.
