International Literacy Day 2013, Lahore (PUNJAB)

Lahore - 9 Sept 2013: International Literacy Day (ILD) was celebrated in Punjab with technical and financial support from UNESCO in collaboration with Literacy Department Punjab. This colorful event was held in Children Complex Hall by Literacy
Department Punjab, in which over 150 participants including teachers, students, representatives of civil society organizations, UN agencies, representatives of education department, and media personals actively participated in event. Mr. Rana Mashhood Education, Minister Punjab graced the event as Chief Guest. Event started with recitation from holly Quran, Additional Secretary Literacy Department, Mr. Nadeem Alam Butt thanked UNESCO for supporting the event in his welcome remarks. UNESCO Islamabad Director/Representative, Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata delivered her message on ILD and appreciated Punjab efforts for Literacy enhancement. On 10th September 2013, the Workshop to Implement Article 25-A was conducted by an NGO PACADE in Quaid-e-Azam Library, Lahore. In this workshop Education Minister Rana Mashhood and Secretary Information-Youth & Culture, Mr. Momin Aga participated. Educationalist, teacher associations and representatives of NGOs also participated in the workshop. The participants shared the gaps to implement Article 25-A and suggested the policies for its proper implementation. UNESCO Islamabad Director/Representative, Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata delivered her message on ILD and discussed the importance of role of education for the country development. She further said that Article 25-A is the first step to achieve the high literacy rate in Pakistan. Education Minister Punjab, Mr. Rana Mashhood shared the efforts of Punjab Government regarding the education reforms in the province and policies towards implementation of Article 25-A. In the end, Mr. Anayatullah, President of PACADE thanked the Chief Guest and participants to attend the workshop.

Aghahi (ITA) to celebrate International Literacy Day. UNESCO Islamabad Director/Representative, Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata delivered her message on ILD and discussed the importance of role of education for the country development. The participants highlighted the issues which are hurdle in gaining the literacy rate in Pakistan. Deputy Secretary Education, Mr. Qaiser Rasheed, shared the government arrangements to provide the missing facilities in schools and policies for new enrollment and quality education in Punjab. He shared the numbers of new enrollment and student teacher ratio which Punjab government is providing. In the end, UNESCO Islamabad Director Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata gave the shields to the prominent teachers for their services in education sector. The chairperson ITA, Miss Narmeen Ahmad thanked UNESCO Director and participants to attend the event.
