International Literacy Day 2013, Quetta

Balochistan Government allocates 24 % budget to Education

International Literacy Day 2013 was celebrated in a befitting and graceful manner in Quetta.
Social Welfare department Government of Balochistan and Directorate of Literacy organized the activity with the technical and financial support of UNESCO. Provincial Minister Raheem Ziarat was the Chief Guest whereas four other members of parliament along with provincial sectaries attended the function. A huge number of people from different walks of life were also present including academia, civil society, media and students of different schools.

During the week long celebrations different events took place in Quetta and five districts of Balochistan. The activities included poster and speech competitions, walks and for the first time Maths as a subject was included and competition was carried out among schools. In total some thirty two schools took part and more than four hundred students appeared in the Maths competition.

The seminar was the culmination point .Speaking on the occasion Minister assured the government`s commitment for the cause of Education as a whole but literacy in particular. He said the government has already launched enrolment campaign and also requested the participants to fully participate in this noble cause. He further said that the present government has for the first time increased education budget to 24 % of the total provincial budget. Other MPAs also spoke on the occasion and assured the audience that the government will pass the Right to Free Education Bill soon as per the article 25-A of the constitution.

The speakers further highlighted that some 773 million people are illiterate in the world most of them are women. Pakistan has to work on war footings to achieve MDGs and improve her literacy rate. The annual budget too needs to be doubled and must be 4.5 % to bring drastic changes in the education sector.

Secretary Social Welfare thanked UNESCO for its support and reassured the participants of working for the betterment of literacy.
