Becoming Literate
Non Formal Education Resource Library

Pakistan, one of the LIFE countries, has been provided a $1 million grant through UNESCO's Capacity-building for EFA Programme. The "Capacity Building for Improving Quality and Scope of Literacy Programmes in Pakistan" is aiming to improve the national capacity for implementation of literacy programmes focusing on poverty reduction and women empowerment. The project has been launched by the Ministry of Education under "Literacy Initiative for Empowerment" (LIFE) in 2006. The key literacy organizations (government and private) are taking active parts in the implementation. The main components of the project are capacity building of NFE personnel, material/curriculum developments, gender empowerment and piloting of community learning centres. Through implementing activities in the project, UNESCO Islamabad also plays an important role to coordinate good partnerships and establish the network among key literacy organizations.
