| Educational Intervention in Ziarat, Balochistan - the District Worst Affected by the Earthquake | |
|
An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the rector scale struck in the northwest of Quetta, Balochistan on 29 October 2008. More than 250 people lost their lives and over 20,000 were made homeless. Infrastructure was badly damaged in the districts of Ziarat, Pishin and Hurnai. The Directorate of Education assessed that 315 schools were partially or completely damaged in these areas, depriving thousands of children of educational facilities. UNESCO's Educational Intervention in Ziarat District, the worst affected district among the 3, aimed to ensure earthquake-affected children continue their learning and recreation activities, and complete their academic year curriculum in a safe and friendly learning environment. UNESCO's focus was only on four worst effected Middle schools in Ziarat due to funding limitations. The successful construction of transitional shelters has enabled 525 students, including 355 girls, of middle schools to continue and complete their academic year in a safe and secure environment. Additionally, this transitional shelter will also bridge the time until a permanent building is constructed. |
