A platform for youth and young professionals in Science Engineering Technology and Innovation (SETI) for DRR launched

Karachi, 21 February 2019: UNESCO in collaboration with NED University of Engineering and Technology launched U-INSPIRE Pakistan at the gala dinner of first South Asia Earthquake Engineering Conference. Under the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR), UNESCO initiated to work with youth and young professionals in Science Engineering Technology and Innovation (SETI) for DRR along with then many work related to empowering youth. In 2018, UNESCO, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and Global Science and Technology Advisory Board UNISDR, facilitated the establishment of the platform called U-INSPIRE (Youth and Young Professionals on Innovation, Science, and Technology Platform for Resiliency); UNESCO expected this initiative to be replicated in the region.

Pakistan is the second country to take the initiative and to establish U-INSPIRE in the Country. The link of youth and young professionals in different countries through their U-INSPIRE platforms will open up discussions and exchange of knowledge that will motivate and inspire youth and young professionals to continue to work on their SETI and contribute their knowledge, capacity, capability to build resiliency towards disaster reduction in their country.

Speaking at the ceremony, Lt. Gen. Nadeem Ahmed, CEO, National Disaster Risk Management Fund, Dr. Sarosh Lodi, Vice Chancellor, NED University, Dr. Asad ur Rehman, Chairman, Civil Engineering Department, NED University, Ms. Irina Ms. Irina Rafliana, Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI), Mr. Hilman Arioaji, U-Inspire Indonesia, Mr. Kaushal Raj Gnyawali, Research Scientist, Himalayan Risk Research Institute(HRI), Nepal and Mr. Raza Shah from UNESCO Islamabad Office highlighted about the bennefits of the platform. Lt. Gen. Nadeem appreciated the effort and assured the support of NDRMF.

UNESCO assured to support the country to empower the youth and young professionals to contribute to disaster risk reduction through the use of science, engineering, technology, and innovation.

On 24 February 2019, first workshop of U-INSPIRE Pakistan was organized in partnership with UNESCO, Institution of Engineers Pakistan and U-INSPIRE Indonesia. Around 30 people from all walks of life participated. Presentations, interactives exercises were conducted during the workshop to raise awareness about U-INSPIRE concept in the audience. Initially U-INSPIRE Pakistan has planned to outreach all universities in the country in coming months.
