Pakistan Integrated Flood Management Information System

In the aftermath of 2010 floods, UNESCO in cooperation with the government of Japan, initiated a major project "Strategic Strengthening of Flood Warning and Management Capacity of Pakistan" for upgrading the early warning system, flood forecasting capacity and the risk mapping of flood plains along the Indus River.

One component of this project has been the development of hydro-meteorological data sharing information system called PIFMIS. Main theme of PIFMIS aka knowledge platform is hydro-meteorological data entry, analysis, and display of flood related information in a user-friendly way. It will serve multiple purposes ranging from flood alert, flood control and management, and providing knowledge base for policy and decision-making (covering issues related to water supply for irrigation, industrial and municipal useage, hydropower generation etc.)

This system will provide a common platform for all stakeholders in flood management including Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), Indus River System Authority (IRSA), Federal Flood Commission (FFC), Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Indus Water Commissioner (IWC), provincial irrigation departments, and many others. All of the aforementioned organizations play a vital role ranging from flood forecasting to flood management and PIFMIS in this regard will enhance their inter-organizational coordination, while sharing precipitation, stage, and discharge data in near real-time.
