Dr. Gwang-Jo Kim Visit to the Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH)

Islamabad - 29 March 2012: Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) and its subsidiary organization Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH) are key partners with UNESCO. Dr. Kim, Director UNESCO Regional Office Bangkok visited Pakistan
Museum of Natural History to explore possibilities of cooperation and partnership. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto - Member Science and Mr. Azher, DG PMNH received Dr. Kim. DG PMNH gave presentation on the functionings and achievement of the museum, he also outlined the priority areas of PMNH in coming years. One of the key areas of interest for UNESCO was the provision Virtual Web Tour. DG PMNH also briefed on the recent capture of Whale Shark in Karachi, and the museum's internention in its preservation.

Dr. Kim along with UNESCO delegation took a tour of the museum, and appreciated the facility's impressive collection in rare species like blind dolphin and snow leopard.

Natural Sciences

UNESCO Islamabad’s Natural Sciences Sector implements science programmes aimed at promoting and supporting sustainable development in Pakistan. Programmes are designed to respond to country’s’ diverse needs, be they the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals or the application of ethics in the practice of cutting edge science. Programme implementation is increasing via the UN “Delivering as One” approach.

UNESCO Islamabad acts as an advocate for science, a platform for generating and sharing ideas and standard setting and promotes dialogue between scientists and policy-makers. It empowers and catalyses innovative initiatives in the field of international cooperation in science, in particular through networks and capacity building.

Key focus areas of the sector are:
• Promote research and technical capacity-building for the sound management of natural resources for disaster preparedness and mitigation.
• Strengthen national research and innovation systems, capacity-building, the use of technologies and scientific networking.
• Encourage the development and implementation of science, technology and innovation policies for sustainable development and poverty reduction.
