International Conference "Step towards Tsunami Resilience"

Karachi - 28 November 2015: United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Islamabad and Jakarta, NED University of Engineering and Technology (NED-UET) and OXFAM Pakistan, joined hands together, to commemorate 70 years of 1945 Markran Tsunami, to raise awareness among the public regarding natural disasters and their preparedness, with specific reference to Tsunami hazards.

The series of commemoration events included 2-Day workshop on Tsunami Inundation Modeling held at Department of Civil Engineering, NED-UETon November 26-27, 2015, and "International Conference Steps towards Tsunami Resilience", held on November 28, 2015 at Marriott Hotel Karachi.

Officials and representatives of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Pakistan Navy, UNESCO, IOC, NED-UET, academia and research institutions in Pakistan attended the event. Five technical sessions were part of the conference. These included sessions on commemoration of 70 year of 1945 Makran Tsunami, Contemporary experiences regarding Tsunami Inundation modeling, risk and hazard assessment, early warning system, and awareness and dissemination.

A documentary on the devastation of 1945 tsunami prepared by UNESCO Islamabad and Jakarta was screened first time in the conference. An Exhibit on the work done by partners was organized with the support of UNESCO Jakarta/Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre (IOTIC).

As an outcome of the conference, Karachi Declaration was adopted by the participants.
